Summer vs Winter Tyres

What’s the Difference and Why It Matters for UK Drivers

When it comes to road safety, your tyres are one of the most important components of your vehicle. They’re the only point of contact between your car and the road — so choosing the right type for the season makes a big difference to your safety, handling, and fuel efficiency.

Some Facts

Here in the UK, tyre-related breakdowns are more common than many realise. According to National Highways, nearly half (47.6%) of all motorway and A-road breakdowns over the past three years were caused by tyre issues. The good news? Many of these could have been avoided through regular checks, maintenance, and the right tyre choice for the weather.

So, what’s the real difference between summer and winter tyres, and which should you be using on your car?

Summer Tyres: Designed for Warmer Weather

Summer tyres are made for conditions where temperatures regularly exceed 7°C — typical of spring, summer and early autumn in the UK.

They’re built using a harder rubber compound that provides better grip, sharper handling and improved fuel efficiency in warmer conditions. Their shallower tread patterns mean more of the tyre stays in contact with the road, giving you better control on both dry and wet surfaces.

However, when temperatures fall below 7°C, the rubber in summer tyres starts to harden, reducing traction and increasing braking distances. That’s when winter tyres take over.

Winter Tyres: Safer in the Cold

Winter tyres (identified by the 3PMSF symbol, showing a mountain and snowflake) are specially designed for colder conditions below 7°C.

They’re made from a softer rubber compound that stays flexible in cold temperatures, maintaining grip on icy and snowy roads. Their deeper tread and fine grooves (called sipes) channel away snow and slush, helping prevent skidding and aquaplaning.

In tests, vehicles braking on wet roads at just 5°C stopped over a full car length shorter when fitted with winter tyres compared to summer tyres — proof that the right tyre choice really can make a life-saving difference.

Summer vs Winter Tyres

All-Season Tyres: The Best of Both Worlds

For many UK drivers, especially in regions like Oxfordshire where winters are often mild, all-season tyres can be a smart alternative.

They combine key features of both summer and winter tyres, offering dependable grip and performance across a wide temperature range (around -10°C to +30°C). While they don’t quite match the extreme performance of dedicated seasonal tyres, they’re ideal for drivers who prefer convenience and consistent safety all year round.

Can You Mix Tyre Types?

While it’s not illegal in the UK, mixing tyre types (for example, having summer tyres on the front and winter tyres on the rear) is strongly discouraged. Different tread patterns and rubber compounds can cause uneven handling and unpredictable braking. For best performance and safety, always replace tyres in pairs on the same axle — and ideally, fit the same model all around.

When Should You Change Your Tyres?

A simple way to remember is this:

  • Below 7°C? Time to fit your winter tyres.
  • Above 7°C? Switch back to summer tyres.
  • Prefer simplicity? Choose all-season tyres for consistent, year-round performance.

A good reminder is the clock change — when we switch to British Summer Time (end of March), think about fitting summer tyres; when we go back to GMT (end of October), it’s time for winter tyres again.
